When I was living in Tokyo, I called Nishiarai in Adachi City home. Kitasenju Station was my daily interchange for work, so naturally I spent many of my free afternoons wandering around the neighbourhood in search of good coffee ☕️
These are the five cafés I found myself going back to again and again ❤️
☕ Lush Coffee Roaster and Laboratory

Hands down my favourite café in Tokyo 👌
Located less than a 10-minute walk from Kitasenju Station, this was my regular brunch spot whenever I had a day off.
I always ordered the same thing: a café latte paired with their Butter Toast Plate 🥪 Simple, comforting and always satisfying.
Coffee and brunch for under ¥2,000? That’s an absolute bargain 💯
Even though I always ordered the exact same meal, their consistency was always on point. Every visit tasted just as good as the last.

Just a 1-minute walk from Lush Coffee, Arang Arang is almost completely hidden from plain sight. Tucked away on the first floor with a tiny entrance, it genuinely feels like you’re stepping into another world.
One thing I found really cute was how you could almost have a faceless interaction with the staff ☎️ There’s an old-school telephone mounted on the wall where you call them to place your order.
Back then my Japanese was still pretty limited, so instead of ordering through the phone, I used it to ask one of the staff to come over and help me with the menu 😂
Their pancakes are to die for 🥞 The perfect balance of savoury and sweet to go with a cup of coffee.
They also serve amazing pizza and pasta if you’re after something more filling 🍕
🍮 Mark’s Coffee

I only discovered this little gem during my final week in Tokyo, and I wish I had found it much sooner 🥹
Hidden away in the Daishi-mae neighbourhood, this cosy little café serves excellent coffee, coffee jelly and pizza toast ☕️🍞
It’s the kind of place that makes you want to slow down and stay a little longer.
If I remember correctly, I even received their coffee jelly as a complimentary dessert ❤️

I stumbled upon this café after an interview in Meguro.
Located just a short walk from Meguro Station, Cafe Deux has been around for decades and specialises in pour-over coffee. Filled with vintage decorations, the whole place feels like stepping back into the ’90s 📻
I asked the owner if they had any recommendations since I usually prefer coffee on the bitter side. They suggested one of their signature pour-overs.
To be honest, I’m still not the biggest fan of pour-over coffee 😂 But I absolutely loved the atmosphere and the warm hospitality here ❤️
🍵 Umakuchi Cafe and Dining

Located just outside Nishiarai Daishi Temple, this café is the perfect place to stop after exploring the temple grounds ⛩️
If you’re visiting in February, Nishiarai Daishi is also where you can watch the annual Daruma Burning ceremony 🔥
Their coffee was excellent, and they also make a really good matcha latte 🍵 Definitely my go-to after a peaceful walk around the temple.
